Background

Dust storms happen when strong winds blow over dry, dusty land. Wind lifts dust into the air, forming a huge dust cloud. This dust can block out sunlight and make it difficult to see. It can clog machines and hurt the lungs and eyes of people and animals.

On Earth, dust storms are most common in deserts because they have few plants and not a lot of moisture. Dust storms are common on Mars because the whole planet is a dry, dusty desert. Sometimes dust storms cover the whole planet, and they can cover up solar panels.
